Refurbishment of, and extension to, a five storey house in Battersea Square, London. The most intriguing features of the house were the small diamond shaped footprint and the remnants of a bakery in the basement. We wanted to retain these features. Our proposal was to create an internal stair core wrapped with a 'thick wall' that travels the height of the building. Within this 'thick wall' we located the bath and shower rooms, WCs and storage. This allowed us to express the unusual shape of the building and make the floors feel considerably larger by opening up the floor plans and layering the view between different rooms. Between the ground floor and the basement we created a large void that connects the two spaces, makes the low ceiling height of the rest of the basement feel comfortable and brings the old bakery oven right into the centre of the home. We extended the building to the rear at ground floor level. The new extension and bespoke kitchen follows the angles of the house and opens up the ground floor to the garden. We have carefully considered the finishes, choosing colours and textures that do not sterilise, but compliment, the old.
